In July 1931, "Pat" Farnsworth opened Farnsworth's Café serving ice cream and confections to the residents of Orono, Maine. By 1953 Pat evolved into a full-service restaurant and added the now-famous pizza to his menu. The fresh dough, made with a special sauce developed by Pat and his wife, Fran, was an instant success. It was this "simple" change that transformed Farnsworth's Café into "Pats's Pizza"
